The pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Cabinet colleague M Venkaiah Naidu displayed on the website of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana violate the model code and should be removed immediately, the Election Commission has ruled.

It has sent a letter to Cabinet Secretary PK Sinha in this regard.

The Election Commission has also asked why this was not done before, given that the model code of conduct was in force since March 4.

The EC asked him to ensure that such photographs were not depicted on other government websites.

The action comes after the EC received a complaint, alleging that the photos of the PM and the Union Minister on the Awas Yojana website in a way promoted the BJP in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh where the scheme was being implemented as the people were required to register under the scheme only through the designated portal.
