The weather gods smiled on West Indies at the right time as the Caribbean side qualified for the 2019 ICC World Cup after struggling past a gritty Scotland by five runs via the Duckworth-Lewis Method in a Super Six match of the Qualifier. Scotland, chasing 199 for a place in next year’s World Cup, were 125/5 in 35.2 overs when a heavy downpour prevented further play in the match. The result has ended Scotland’s hopes of featuring in their second successive World Cup and fourth overall since 1999.

In the winner-takes-all match, West Indies lost Chris Gayle on the very first ball, and Shai Hope soon after to be 2/2. Evin Lewis (66, 87b) and Marlon Samuels (51, 98b), however, revived the innings by adding 121 runs for the third wicket. Nevertheless, West Indies failed to capitalize on the partnership and were bowled out for 198 in 48.4 overs, with the last eight wickets falling for just 75 runs.

The West Indian bowlers struck early, reducing Scotland to 25/3. At 125/5, Scotland was still in the game when the heavens opened up and swept West Indies into the World Cup.

Brief scores: West Indies: 198 all out in 48.4 overs (Evin Lewis 66, Marlon Samuels 51; Safyaan Sharif 3/27, Brad Wheal 3/34); Scotland: 125/5 in 35.2 overs (Richie Berrington 33, George Munsey 32*; Kemar Roach 2/20).

DRS to be used in IPL this year

The Decision Review System, already used in the T-Twenty Internationals, will be introduced at the upcoming edition of the cash-rich Indian Premier League.

“Yes, this idea has been going around for many years,” said IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla at a media conference  confirming that the TV replay system will be utilised if a team challenges an umpiring decision.

Each team is given one chance to review an umpiring decision during a T20 innings at the international level.
