Australia to seek extradition of Indian who killed student

Australia will seek the extradition of an Indian man who allegedly killed a student and injured another in a hit-and-run case here about 10 years ago, Victoria premier Daniel Andrews’ office has said ahead of his India visit. The then 19-year-old Puneet was in an inebriated state and speeding along the Southbank in Melbourne when the crash happened on October 1, 2008.

Nursing student Dean Hofstee, 19, was killed and 20-year-old Clancy Coker was seriously injured in the accident. The victims were students from Queensland. He was arrested on November 29, 2013 from Punjab after a four-year manhunt. “Premier Daniel Andrews will be visiting India next week. He’ll be conveying this directly to the Indian government — this individual must face justice and he must face justice in Australia,” a statement from the Premier’s office said.

Myanmar forces responsible for killing 10 Rohingya: Army

Myanmar security forces took part in a massacre of 10 Rohingya in September, the army chief’s office has said, as it admitted for the first time abuses during a crackdown that sparked a mass exodus of the Muslim minority. The massacre took place on September 2 at Inn Din village in Rakhine state, the Facebook post said, as tensions escalated pitting Rohingya against security forces and ethnic Rakhine locals following the killing of a Rakhine man. “Some villagers and security members confessed they killed 10 Bengali terrorists,” the office said in its post, using a pejorative term for Rohingya and blaming militants for causing the unrest in the village. The post also gave the first confirmation of a mass Rohingya grave inside Rakhine state following an army-led crackdown on militants from the minority group in late August
