The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has announced that the Governor General appointed David Adams Richards as an independent Senator to fill a vacancy for New Brunswick.

Mr. Richards is an acclaimed Canadian novelist, essayist, screenwriter and poet, whose commitment to the Miramichi River valley, New Brunswick, and Canada is reflected in his body of work. He was chosen using the open merit-based process the Government of Canada put in place in early 2016. This process ensures Senators are independent, reflect Canada’s diversity, and are able to tackle the broad range of challenges and opportunities facing the country.
“I am pleased to put forward another exceptional candidate as new Senator for the province of New Brunswick. I look forward to working with Mr. Richards, and all Senators, as they put their vast knowledge and experience to the service of our Parliament and our great country,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Under the Canadian Constitution, the Governor General appoints people to the Senate. By convention, Senators are appointed on the advice of the Prime Minister.

Ontario is improving access to care for people with chronic kidney disease in Scarborough, with the addition of more dialysis stations as well as other programs such as diabetes education at Scarborough and Rouge Hospital.
Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, and Soo Wong, MPP for Scarborough–Agincourt, were at the Scarborough and Rouge Hospital’s Birchmount Site to announce that Ontario is providing a grant to help the hospital plan and construct a new dialysis facility.
The new, modern facility will provide treatment to patients with chronic kidney disease and respond to the growing needs of the community. It will accommodate 45 dialysis stations, including 19 new stations and 26 stations that are being relocated from other sites, providing patients and families in Scarborough with better access to the high quality services that they need.
In addition, the new facility will accommodate six home hemodialysis stations relocated from the General site as well as three new home hemodialysis training stations. These stations will be used to train and support patients who are determined to be suitable to perform their own treatment at home, without medical intervention.
Ontario is making the largest infrastructure investment in hospitals, schools, public transit, roads and bridges in the province’s history. To learn more about what’s happening in your community, go to Ontario.ca/BuildON.
