Two men holding replica guns sparked a panic at Paris’ main Charles de Gaulle airport before they were quickly arrested. Passengers were evacuated from Terminal 2 for around 45 minutes after the incident. A passenger raised the alarm after seeing two men “who did not speak French with weapons in a case”. “There was a wave of panic in Terminal 2 when people saw the weapons.” Border agents had detained the pair, who spoke Russian and did not have police records. One of the men had just landed, and the other was a friend who had come to meet him. The guns were “airsoft” pistols, replica weapons used for sport.

Egypt’s president has denied that he fat-shamed his own people after his recent calls for Egyptians to lose weight prompted a torrent of jokes online. In televised comments, President el-Sissi said “How can I shame my own family? Egyptians are my family. How can I watch them putting on weight and stay quiet?” He noted the “incredible” number of jokes in response to his call and, chuckling, suggested people “take it easy with the jokes at my expense.” Egypt has one of the world’s highest rates of obesity. Millions of people rely on government-subsidized bread and other staples, and the price of healthier foods has soared following recent austerity measures.

Afghanistan postpones presidential election

Afghanistan’s presidential election, initially scheduled for April, will be postponed for several months to allow time to fix technical problems that surfaced during October’s parliamentary elections. More time is needed to verify voter lists and train staff on a biometric identification system designed to reduce fraud, said Abdul Aziz Ibrahimi, deputy spokesman for the Independent Election Commission.October polls were fraught with delays. Hundreds of polling stations opened several hours late and many registered voters could not find their names on voter lists. No new date for the election has yet been set
