Brampton South – In the lead up to Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation, MP Sonia Sidhu has asked local students to submit entries to her #MyCanada competition. The competition asked students to submit something – either a piece of art, an essay, or other means of expression – to share what Canada means to them.
On Friday, June 16, MP Sidhu named the three top prize winners, though she said selecting just three winners from the entries was a difficult task.

“I was truly impressed by the number and quality of the entries,” MP Sidhu said. “It is both touching and inspiring to see our youth present in an artistic way what it means to them to be Canadian.”
As part of the celebration of Canada 150, MP Sidhu said she had wanted to find a fun way to engage young Bramptonians, and encourage reflection on being Canadian.
“It has often been said that Canada is stronger not in spite of our differences but because of them, and the submissions really highlighted the diversity that makes Canada so strong,” she said.
Approximately 45 submissions were entered, including essays, videos and artistic expressions.
The three winners were:
Third Place – Akshaj Gupta from Ray Lawson Public School, winning a lunch with MP Sonia Sidhu
Second Place: Marriam Qureshi and Karemma Barrera from St. Augustine Secondary School. These recipients will shadow MP Sidhu for a day at the Brampton-South Constituency Office.
First place: Andres Lictas from St. Augustine Secondary School. Andres will receive a trip to Ottawa on Via Rail and a tour of Parliament in September.
The contest was open to students in elementary and secondary schools in Brampton South, to celebrate the important occasion of Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation.
