A newly elected member of parliament from the Labour Party called for the end to the monarchy before affirming an oath of allegiance to the Queen.
Labour’s candidate for East Leeds at the recently concluded general election, Richard Burgon, who won by garnering 54% of the vote share broke convention and said, “As someone that believes that the head of state should be elected I make this oath in order to serve my constituents“.
Queen Elizabeth is the head of state of United Kingdom but is unable to vote or stand for election. All MPs have to swear an oath in order to take their seats.
The MP added his own lines to the oath highlighting his opposition to a monarchy .
He made it clear that he was “forced“ to swear his allegiance to the British monarch.
