More Transit Options for Mississauga and Brampton Commuters

Ontario Moving Forward on Hurontario Light Rail Transit Project

• The Hurontario LRT project is being procured as a design, build, finance, operate and maintain contract using IO’s alternative financing and procurement.
• The Hurontario LRT project will provide a crucial link between many of the region’s existing transit lines, including GO Transit’s Milton and Lakeshore West rail lines, Brampton Züm, and the Mississauga Transitway.
• Through the Moving Ontario Forward plan, the government is investing in priority rapid transit projects that will connect to the GO Transit network and other transit systems across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). These projects will increase transit ridership, reduce travel times, manage congestion, connect people to jobs, and improve the economy.
• The province’s Moving Ontario Forward plan will make $31.5 billion available over the next 10 years for investments in priority infrastructure projects across the province, with around $16 billion allocated to transit and transportation projects in the GTHA, and about $15 billion available for investment in roads, bridges, transit and other critical infrastructure in the rest of the province.

Ontario is taking the next step in building the Hurontario light rail transit (LRT) project, which will offer more transit options and improve commutes for people travelling in Mississauga and Brampton.

Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx issued a request for qualifications (RFQ) for a vendor to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the Hurontario LRT project, and procure a fleet of light rail vehicles.

The new LRT line will bring 20 kilometres of new, dedicated rapid transit between Port Credit GO Station in Mississauga and the Gateway Terminal at Steeles Ave. in Brampton. It will serve 22 surface stops connecting one urban growth centre, four mobility hubs, two GO Transit rail lines and a number of interchange stops with Brampton and Mississauga transit.

Ontario is making the largest investment in public infrastructure in the province’s history — about $160 billion over 12 years, which is supporting 110,000 jobs every year across the province, with projects such as hospitals, schools, roads, bridges and transit.
