March 24, 2016 – Ottawa, ON – MP Deepak Obhrai, Conservative Critic for International Development, today condemned suggestions from the Liberal Minister of International Development Marie Claude-Bibeau that Canada’s aid spending will help Canada win a seat on the UN Security Council.

He said using aid funding in this way appears to contradict the Official Development Assistance Accountability Act.

“The Official Development Assistance Accountability Act is very clear: Canadian development assistance must be focused on poverty reduction, democracy promotion, and the promotion of international human rights. It is not to be used for partisan Liberal gain.”

“This kind of reckless spending will only increase the budget deficit, which as presented this week is $30 billion, three times what the Liberals promised during the campaign. Canadians should be concerned that not only are the Liberals creating structural deficits, but they are only doing so to improve their personal standing at the United Nations.”
