“Karen is a dedicated community leader and a champion for a strong middle class, and she’ll never stop working hard to build a better future for families in Burnaby South.”

Federal Liberals have announced  that daycare operator Karen Wang has been nominated as the candidate in an upcoming by-election. The former B.C. Liberal candidate will run against NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh in Burnaby South. Wang defeated scientist Cyrus Eduljee. The Conservatives have nominated lawyer Jay Shin. The seat was vacated earlier this year by Kennedy Stewart after he decided to run for mayor of Vancouver.

“We are very proud to have Karen Wang on Team Trudeau for the upcoming by-election in Burnaby South, as our Liberal movement continues to grow across British Columbia,” Liberal Party of Canada president Suzanne Cowan said in a party news release.“Karen is a dedicated community leader and a champion for a strong middle class, and she’ll never stop working hard to build a better future for families in Burnaby South.”

In the 2017 provincial election, Wang ran as the B.C. Liberal candidate in Burnaby–Deer Lake, losing to the NDP’s Anne Kang.

Last year, the B.C. NDP won every seat in Burnaby—the first time this had occurred since 1991. (Christy Clark won Port Moody–Burnaby Mountain in 1996). However in the 2015 federal election, Stewart defeated Liberal candidate Adam Pankratz by fewer than 600 votes.

Pankratz actually captured the most votes on election day on October 19, 2015, but Stewart had a 1,303-vote lead in the advance poll before the Trudeau campaign peaked.According to the 2016 census, there were 19,670 Mandarin and 13,375 Cantonese speakers in Burnaby South that year. There were also 3,915 Tagalog speakers, 3,500 Korean speakers, and 2,375 Punjabi speakers in the riding in the 2016 census. The Conservative candidate, Shin, is a fluent Korean speaker and Singh speaks fluent Punjabi
