India skipper Virat Kohli has reportedly shown interest in getting former team director Ravi Shastri back as head coach of the Indian team after the unceremonious exit of Anil Kumble. According to a leading daily from India that cited its sources, Kohli mentioned Shastri’s name as one of the potential candidates for the India job during his meeting with BCCI officials in London.  The meeting was attended by BCCI secretary Amitabh Choudhary, CEO Rahul Johri and MV Sridhar, General Manager (cricket operations).

Coach before Lanka tour

BCCI’s acting president CK Khanna and another senior official, Rajeev Shukla,  said that the new coach would be appointed before India’s tour of Sri Lanka next month and his contract would run up to the 2019 World Cup in England. “BCCI has decided to invite a few more applicants. Before the Sri Lanka tour, the coach will be appointed,” Shukla said.

“KUMBLE’S SHOES WILL BE HARD TO FILL,” SEHWAG

Anil Kumble’s resignation as India coach has placed several questions in front of India team. The most important one is who will be his successor? Out of the five names that have come up Virender Sehwag’s is the most high profile one. Asked about the next India coach, Sehwag said the next occupant will find it hard to replicate Kumble’s success. “I have never played under Kumble – the coach. However, he has been my senior, my captain. In fact my comeback in international cricket was under him. The India team’s performance under him has been phenomenal. Whoever comes in as his successor will find it hard to fill in his shoes,” Sehwag told media in India.

The Contenders

The BCCI top brass had an inkling that all was not well but was taken aback that Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble were not on talking terms for the “last six months”.

Another point that has come out was that the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, also didn’t give the green light to Kumble’s extension.

“There had been reports that the CAC had okayed Kumble’s extension. They had said that Kumble should be retained provided all pending issues are resolved,” a BCCI official told media in India. Post the ICC Champions Trophy final, there were three separate meetings. In the first, Kumble met the BCCI top brass and members of CAC followed by Kohli meeting them. The most “eventful” meeting was when Kohli and Kumble sat across the table. The talks failed as there was no communication.“The two had stopped talking since December when the England Test series got over. On Sunday evening after the final, they were made to sit across table and they both agreed that it’s not working out.”
