A week after he moved to fourth spot, India’s Test captain Virat Kohli has attained a career-high third place in the latest ICC Test rankings for batsmen. Kohli’s scores of 62 and 6* during India’s eight-wicket win over England in the third Test in Mohali moved him up a spot and gave the 28-year-old 833 points.

Ravindra Jadeja’s Man-of-the-Match showing in Mohali (90 and four wickets) has moved him up two spots to a career-best fourth in the allrounders’ list. R Ashwin remains the No 1 ranked allrounder with 493 points, a tally not reached by anyone since Jacques Kallis in 2008.

Mohammed Shami’s five wickets in Mohali earned him a promotion from No 21 to No 19 in the bowlers’ list. Kohli is now just 14 points adrift of the second-ranked Test batsman, England’s Joe Root, with two Tests to play between the teams. Kohli had entered the best-of-five series against England at 15th place on the ICC List and has soared on the basis of 405 runs so far. Australian captain Steve Smith is at No 1. Also making solid upwards movement is England wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow – also the leading run-getter in Tests this year – who went up three places to a career-best ranking of nine.
