Japan Football captain Makoto Hasebe has announced his retirement from the national team, on the heels of the squad’s heartbreaking ejection from the World Cup in a match against Belgium. “I have decided to end the chapter of my career with the national team with this tournament,” Hasebe wrote on his Instagram account. The 34-yearold defensive midfielder’s departure from the Blue Samurai could mean a changing of the guard for the team, with former AC Milan striker Keisuke Honda, 32, also saying he plans to retire from the national squad. Hasebe, who won the German Cup with Eintracht Frankfurt last season, has been on the national team for more than 12 years.

England midfielder Fabian Delph is rejoining the squad after flying home for the birth of his daughter. The 28-year-old missed Tuesday’s thrilling win over Colombia, having earlier been given permission by manager Gareth Southgate to attend the birth of his child. “I’ve just experienced the most amazing 24 hours,” Delph said in a social media post. He has played two games so far.
Sushil loses first bout in four years
Sushil Kumar lost his first bout in more than four years while competing at Tbilisi Grand Prix in Georgia even as his compatriots Bajrang Punia and Deepak Punia progressed to the quarterfinals. Sushil lost 4-8 to Polish grappler Andrzej Piotr Sokalski in the 74kg category. Ahead of the Asian Games, the defeat could raise some uncomfortable questions as the Wrestling Federation of India had exempted him from trials on the basis of his record and current form.
