Following allegations of privacy breaches and recent scandals in the digital world, Canadians are concerned about their privacy, security and rights as consumers. To address these fears, while the Liberals continue to drag their feet on these issues, Brian Masse, NDP Critic for Innovation, Science and Economic Development, will present a motion in the House of Commons. The government to protect the country’s consumers and their digital rights.

“After Facebook’s claims of privacy breach last week, as well as the iPhone battery scandal last January, stand up for Canadian consumers. The digital landscape is constantly evolving and there is nothing in place to protect and inform consumers before another scandal occurs, Masse said. My motion is a starting point to protect the Canadian people and to put their rights in the digital world. “

Masse’s private member’s motion calls for universal and affordable access to the Internet and digital platforms for all Canadian consumers. It also protects the rights of Canadians to privacy, security, ownership of personal data and information, as well as the consent required to use this data, as well as the judicial oversight of surveillance, site blocking and disconnection. It also provides for the development of digital literacy skills, particularly for seniors and youth in Canada.

In addition, it focuses on the guaranteed protection of net neutrality and the study of the impact of digital technologies on the health of consumers, among others.

“In the coming months, I will be meeting people from across the country to hear their concerns about digital issues,” said Mr. Masse. It is time for the government to take concrete steps to protect the privacy of Canadians, their personal data and their safety. It is time to introduce a Canadian Digital Rights Declaration. “
