President Donald Trump earlier said that he had made a decision on whether to walk away from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, setting the stage for a contentious meeting of the parties to the agreement. The meeting will be the highest-level US-Iranian interaction of Trump’s presidency. Trump, when asked by reporters about the nuclear accord, said, “I have decided. I’ll let you know.”

His comment came just hours before secretary of state Rex Tillerson and Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif were to attend a European Union-hosted meeting about the agreement at the UN.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani insisted that  his country had complied with the nuclear accord it signed with six world powers, and warned “rogue newcomer“ Donald Trump that the US would face isolation if he tore it up.

Addressing the UN General Assembly a day after the US president appeared on the same podium to launch a blistering attack on Iran and on the 2015 accord, Rouhani warned the fate of the deal could not be decided by “one or two countries“. But he also said Iran desired to preserve its accord under which Tehran agreed to restrict its nuclear programme for a decade in return for the loosening of economic sanctions that crippled its economy .

“I declare before you Iran will not be the first country to violate the agreement,” Rouhani said, adding Iran would respond “decisively and resolutely“ to a violation by any party . “It will be a great pity if this pact were to be destroyed by rogue newcomers to the world of politics. The world will have lost a great opportunity.“ “By violating its international commitments, the new US administration only destroys its own credibility and undermines international confidence in negotiating with it or accepting its word or promise.“
