Inquest into the Death of Nokolaos Mpelos Announced

Dr. James Edwards, Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Toronto East Office,  announced that an inquest will be held into the death of Nokolaos Mpelos.

Mr. Mpelos, 65, died on May 26, 2013, at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Toronto. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act when a person dies while being restrained and while detained in and on the premises of a psychiatric facility.

The inquest will examine the events surrounding Mr. Mpelos’s death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest is expected to last 10 days and to hear from approximately 15 witnesses.

The inquest will commence at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 16, 2017, at the Forensic Services and Coroners Complex, Court Room B, 25 Morton Shulman Ave., Toronto. Dr. Roger Skinner will preside and Michael Blain will be counsel to the coroner.
