The City of Vaughan is holding a public meeting on a proposal it has received to expand the Sports Village located at 2600 Rutherford Road into a privately held, publicly accessible multi-use community space. Citizens and interested stakeholders are being asked to share their thoughts and comments during a facilitated discussion on Sunday, Jan. 20 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sports Village. Those interested in attending can register at vaughan.ca/SportsVillage. Also, an additional consultation for residents of Villa Giardino and in the area represented by the South Maple Ratepayers’ Association will be held on Sunday, Feb. 17 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Vaughan City Hall.

The proposal, which was submitted by current Sports Village operator Mentana Group of Companies, has three main components: a site concept master plan for Berkeley Academy and an entertainment centre, an offer to acquire from the City the land on which the Sports Village operates, and an offer to amend the business terms of the current agreement with the City.

The outcomes of all upcoming public consultation will be summarized in a staff report and help inform Council’s decision on next steps. In addition to the meetings, residents can share their comments by calling Access Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or emailing sportsvillage@vaughan.ca. A short online survey will also be available on the City’s website until Wednesday, Feb. 13.

The proposal was first received by Vaughan Council at Committee of the Whole on June 16, 2015. City staff then conducted a review and brought on external experts to do an evaluation and produce a business case analysis assessing the benefits and risks, which was presented to Council at Committee of the Whole on June 6, 2018.
