Government for the people!

“Premier Doug ford is having same problem as any other politician who has ever tried to balance the budget. Facing complaints from those sectors that gets the cut. No one will ever be popular on the platform of cutting the deficit.

A year back, when he was on his campaign trail, Doug Ford used to mention “for the people” routinely in his speeches. And he brought the Conservatives back to power, as the same very people restored their faith in the party and more so in Doug Ford knowing very well that he didn’t have much experience in the provincial politics. Even during his victory address, Premier Doug Ford claimed his “victory belonged to the people”, and promised to run a “government that works for the people”.

Last Friday, at the completion of first year of being in power, Doug Ford held a press conference and highlighted key achievements in last one year and his assertion that “Ontario is back on track” and reminded Ontarians that his government will keep on working for them. “Our government will continue to put you first,” he told Ontarians. He claimed that his government has been moving at a “lighting speed”, and he mentioned that reforms have been effective due to budget cuts in areas such as child care, education and taxes. Premier Doug Ford also gave credit to his “pro-business policies” and the cutting of the red tape for creating 190,000 jobs in last one year. Premier Doug Ford sounded so confidant that he overruled any change in his ministries.

Though Premier Doug Ford went all out to highlight the achievements and promoting his tag line “government for the people”, some of the voters may have doubts on the claims so made by the province regime.  A Corbett Communications poll of 1,555 Ontarians published last week suggests a majority of Ontario voters are “less likely” to vote for federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer in the Oct. 21 national election because of Ford’s policies. Thus indicating that policies of Premier Doug Ford are not directed towards the benefit of the Ontarians, as being claimed by the Premier. Also, his style of working is going to affect the chance of his party for the federal polls. Premier Doug ford is having same problem as any other politician who has ever tried to balance the budget. Facing complaints from those sectors that gets the cut. No one will ever be popular on the platform of cutting the deficit.

Also the Ontario legislature is now on extended break until October 28. That’s exactly seven days after the Federal election. In a normal course the MPPs should have returned on September 9th.   “They need to go back to their ridings and talk to the people who elected them,” Ford said. Of course that means working for the party when the federal elections are on. But at the cost of the skipping the legislature? The Ontario government just can’t sit on its laurels. Rather, it really needs to look at competitiveness, productivity, tax base, tax rates, controlled spending and work as a “government for the people”, and not just for the party.
