Funding to improve these facilities is possible through the new federal infrastructure investment program
• The federal infrastructure investments, announced by Prime Minister Harper in November 2014, will build and renew infrastructure across the country, creating jobs and economic prosperity for local communities.
• The Department of National Defence has received $452 million for the repair and upgrade of Canadian Armed Forces facilities.
• Over the next two years, $135 million will be invested in projects involving repairs to roofs, siding, plumbing, and heating and ventilation systems. By completing this work, DND will ultimately improve the efficiency and reduce maintenance costs at these facilities.
• The Government estimates that accelerated investments will also support the creation of over 10 000 jobs in communities across Canada, including the Toronto area, by the end of 2016.

Julian Fantino, Associate Minister of National Defence announced a $19.5 million investment in defence infrastructure at six Toronto facilities. The work will be carried out over the next two years, and begin this summer.
The six facilities which will benefit from these infrastructure investments are: the Canadian Forces College will be upgraded and repaired at a cost of $4 million. The work includes the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system in the Curtis Hall; the co-located Denison Armoury and Military Family Resource Centre will be upgraded and repaired at a cost of $3.6 million. Work includes a heating and ventilation system and emergency generator for the Armoury and other repairs and upgrades for the centre; the naval reserve division HMCS York will benefit from new sanitation lines, along with other repairs including the jetty retaining wall, at a cost of $4 million; and, the Moss Park and Fort York armouries will see interior and exterior renovations and health and safety upgrades at a cost of $7.9 million.
These significant investments, announced by Minister Fantino, will improve the working environment for military personnel and their families, while also help support Toronto’s economy and help boost job creation.
“It is an honour for me to be here today at the Denison Armoury, in Toronto, to announce these important infrastructure projects for our brave men and women in uniform. Investments in defence infrastructure across Canada will ensure that students, reservists, regular force personnel, and their families benefit from a better learning environment and modern facilities. It is another example of our Government’s commitment to upgrading Canadian Armed Forces facilities, including family resource centres. These significant investments throughout Toronto will also help fuel job creation and be a positive boost to our local economy,”said Julian Fantino, Associate Minister of National Defence.

Conservative EI mismanagement hurts poorest families, claims NDP
“You receive a letter saying that an error was committed eight years ago and that, consequently, you are owed money. This would be laughable if it wasn’t so tragic for the families who have faced and still face financial difficulty,”

The Conservative government’s serious mismanagement of the Employment Insurance system has hurt Canada’s poorest families, the NDP has said. Since 2007, hundreds of low income families have not received the millions in EI benefits they were entitled to because of problems with the government’s processing system.
“You receive a letter saying that an error was committed eight years ago and that, consequently, you are owed money. This would be laughable if it wasn’t so tragic for the families who have faced and still face financial difficulty,” said Robert Aubin (Trois-Rivières), NDP critic for Employment Insurance. “The minister, who repeatedly claimed that Employment Insurance was there for those who need it most, must not only apologize, but also make every effort to put his words into action.”
Under the Conservative regime, EI wait times have increased significantly, with record high numbers of Canadians waiting over 28 days just to receive their benefits. Those appealing their claim to the Social Security Tribunal are forced to wait even longer.
“These wait times are simply unacceptable. The problem must be addressed immediately,” added Robert Chisholm (Dartmouth – Cole Harbour), deputy NDP critic for Employment Insurance. “These families deserve to be paid the money they are owed right away. This latest fiasco is yet further proof that the Harper government does not consider Employment Insurance and those who need it a priority.”
