Every Sunday, MP Raj Grewal invites and hosts a basketball drop-in for the youth of Brampton East at Gore Meadows Community Centre. This is a wonderful opportunity to get youth off the streets and expending their energy on playing basketball, where you learn the ideas of teamwork, respect and competition.
MP Grewal is a firm believer of providing opportunities for youth to engage with others in a healthy and safe environment. Sport brings people of all backgrounds together and it is important to create spaces where this engagement can happen.
Most Sundays between 2 and 5pm, you can find MP Grewal at the court where he can interact with the young ballers of Brampton East. During breaks, MP Grewal speaks with some of the youth that have come out and engage with them on topics like school, the Toronto Raptors and issues affecting them or the community. With a diverse age group coming out, this gives MP Grewal an opportunity to learn about the issues impacting youth of all ages.
Over the course of the past several months, the number of young people coming out to play basketball has steadily grown. This environment creates a safe space for youth who have the opportunity to talk to MP Grewal and make new friends.
About his love for the sport, MP Grewal said, “Basketball is the fastest growing sport in Canada. All you really need is a basketball and hoop. It is a perfect sport for building important core skills that will help young people succeed in their lives.”
