Punjab Director General of Police Sumedh Saini said there was no way to release any convict who is undergoing life term following a Supreme Court order. He said there was no convict in Punjab who can be released as of now.
Saini, while addressing a press conference, cited a Supreme Court ruling — in the Union of India v/s Sriharan alias Murgan and others — to assert that no convict could be released prematurely by any state government.
He said the matter had been examined at the government level and it was decided to move an application before the SC for an early decision.
“There was no convict (for any kind of crime) who was in a state jail after completion of his sentence. No one can keep a person in the jail after the sentence is over,” he said.
