Congress hold BJP responsible for “making Nehru’s grandfather a muslim”

The Congress has slammed the NDA government over alleged tampering of Wikipedia entries related to former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his forefathers, seeking an explanation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi
on a day he launched the Digital India initiative.
“Wikipedia pages of Jawaharlal Nehru and Motilal Nehru were altered. What is worse that it is done from a government Internet Protocol address and from government owned National Informatics Centre,” Congress communication department chief Randeep Surjewala said. “Will the prime minister answer now?” he said.
The Congress was furious after reports that a software that tracks anonymous Wikipedia edits had found that the entries related to India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his forefathers on June 26 had mentioned that Nehru’s grandfather Gangadhar Nehru was a Muslim.
The changes, which originated from a government of India IP (Internet Protocol) address, were later deleted by volunteer editors of the online encyclopedia.
Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh said the government needed to explain such mischief. “If this is true, Government of India owes us an explanation on the day Digital India is being launched.
Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi described the alterations as petty and said his party had proof of the wrong-doing attempted by a hacker.
“Prima-facie we have enough evidence. I have the user IP Number which establishes that this is an ‘nic’ (National Informatics Centre) based alteration of internet material on the Wikipedia to attempt to change it in 2015 the religion of a respected former PM of India and a world statesman,” Singhvi said.
The Congress leader wanted to know what action had the government taken in the matter. “Will the Prime Minister and the Minister of Information Technology kindly tell us which FIR has been lodged? As per @AnonGoIWPEdits, the Twitter handle of a software that tracks anonymous Wikipedia edits, the edits made on June 26 said Nehru’s grandfather Gangadhar Nehru was a Muslim.
These edits, which were later deleted by volunteer Wikipedia editors, had said: “Gangadhar was born as a Muslim by the name of Ghiasuddin Ghazi but changed his name to a Hindu Ganga Dhar to escape British clutches.”
Details of Jawaharlal Nehru’s “affair” with Edwina Mountbatten, the wife of India’s first governor general, Lord Mountbatten, were also added on his Wikipedia page.
Wikipedia page on Sanjay Gandhi was also altered on the same day.
