Yet again! Pakistan has done it. India is left with eighteen soldiers dead. For a change, India is furious. On September 18, suspected terrorists of the Pakistan-backed Jaish-e-Mohammed mounted a deadly attack on an Indian Army camp in Jammu & Kashmir killing 18 of its soldiers and injuring many others.

Ever since Independence, Pakistan has been consistently raising the Kashmir agenda and causing trouble in the valley. Islamabad has left no stone unturned to exaggerate the problem at international platforms and even taken the lead to suggest solutions from its own perspective while maintaining that Kashmir is an international issue. Valley faced an unprecedented unrest with curfew remaining in force for good two months. Following the recent unrest, Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif declared that he would strongly raise the issue of human rights violations in Kashmir in his speech at the UN General Assembly on September 21. A clear indication that trouble in the valley was well crafted by Pakistan to create a ground for Nawaz Shairf to rake up Kashmir once again.

The attack on the army base in Uri on 18th Septemberwas for the same objective. It is the highest casualty suffered by theIndian Army in a single attack in Kashmir in the past two decades. The four fidayeen (Terrorists) involved in the attack were killed. All these years, India has been maintaining a non oppressive approach and has stuck to the stand, ‘Kashmir is an integral part of India.” A cautious approach, has only allowed India to go in a reactive mode. After each attack by Pakistan, India has sent proofs of Pakistan’s involvement and Pakistan as always has denied the evidence and its involvement. India by such a candid approach has only given an impression that it lacks a focused and strategic response. When Pakistan tried capturing territory in J&K’s Kargil region in 1999, India used maximum restrain and didn’t cross over into Pakistani territory. When Pakistan sponsored militants killed 164 people at “Mumbai 26/11 attacks” in 2008, India did not respond with military action.

Since July, Pakistan has been issuing statements condemning the use of force in Kashmir. Accordingly, New Delhi changed its response brining the focus back on Pakistan. Narendra Modi government went a step further. Narendra Modi’s remarks on Baluchistan in his Independence Day address indicates that India is willing to change and that too dramatically. “Till the time Baluchistan faces repression, and human rights violations continue there, India will raise this issue,” India has repeatedly maintained even since Prime Minister Modi mentioned Baluchistan. Locals in Baluchistan want secession and their demand is met with a crackdown by the army. India has decided to use this province of Pakistan to get aggressive with Pakistan.

It was through treachery, guile and fraud that Pakistan seized control of Baluchistan. Baluch nationalists have since fought wars continuously with Pakistan — in 1948, 1958-1959, 1962-63 and 1973-74. Perhaps the longest conflict that failed to get much attention in the world started in 2003. Thousands of Baluch youths have ‘disappeared’ after being taken into custody by the army. And now questions are being raised over Pakistan’s claims of sovereignty over Baluchistan. The same treachery is being used to sponsor acts of terrorism not only in India, but also in Afghanistan. Tracking Osama bin Laden within Pakistan said it all.

Clearly, India has had enough of Pakistan sending terrorists to India and raking up Kashmir at the drop of the hat, With Pakistan, Narendra Modi has tried extremes to everyone’s surprise. Modi’s unannounced Lahore visit was meant at courting Nawaz Sharif’s government with an objective to bring peace in the region. But Pakistan has forced India to the other extreme. Narendra Modi’s adopted policy of taking on Pakistan at its internal trouble prone areas may not be able to create a separate land for Baloch’s in near future, but can ward off pressure on Kashmir.

India’s strategy of raking up Baluchistan was meant to let Pakistan know that its activism at Kashmir would be met with diplomatic pressure from all international platforms by addressing the issues of Baluchistan. Knowing very well that the attack at Uri just days before the United Nations General Assembly would only strengthen India’s argument on terrorism- Nevertheless Pakistan is using the fear of war to bring global attention on Kashmir.

There have been numerous suggestions that India should go in for surgical military strike, and only attack the terror camps within Pakistani territory. Whether that would be able to deter Pakistan from future attacks has to be scrutinized as it takes just a handful of ultras to cause havoc. Both India and Pakistan are armed with nuclear arsenal. Even though India has a much larger army and has left Pakistan deterred in all previous four wars, armed offensive is not an option since Pakistan has refused to reciprocate India’s no first use policy on nuclear weapons.

With stories of exile Baloch leader BrahamdaghBugtireportedly seeking asylum in India is doinga buzz, it has only added to India’s attempt to highlight Baluchistan’s case in the international forums. It comes as a huge blow to Pakistan as it has come at a time when Islamabad is being cornered by New Delhi for its alleged involvement in terror activities.
