Celebrate Ontario’s 150th Anniversary in 2017

Events Taking Place Across the Province Year-Round

• The former British colonies of Canada, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia are the original provinces of the confederation of Canada, established on July 1, 1867. Ontario and Quebec were part of the Province of Canada pre-Confederation.
• Ontario is the most multicultural province in Canada — about 40 per cent of those who immigrate to Canada each year choose to settle in Ontario.

The kickoff to an exciting year has begun as Ontario celebrates the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

The government is recognizing the historical significance of 2017 with Ontario150, a year-long commemoration that will honour Ontario’s past, showcase the present and inspire future generations.

Ontario is marking the occasion in a meaningful way by investing in initiatives and events that will leave a lasting legacy for people across the province.  Highlights include:

• Winter Week, a celebration of 100 years of hockey in Toronto at various City of Toronto rinks (January 3-8)
• National Canada Film Day 150, which will be the world’s largest  one-day film festival ever hosted, featuring free screenings of Canadian movies across the province (April 19, 2017)
• Lieutenant Governor’s Visionaries Prize, youth fora to share ideas on building a brighter, stronger Ontario (September 13-October 3)
• Invictus Games, an international multi-sport event for wounded soldiers (September 23-30)
• EDIT – the Expo for Design Innovation + Technology, a 10-day international design festival that will explore how design and innovation can address global issues (September 28-October 8)

Ontario is supporting a Community Capital Program, a Partnership Program and a Community Celebration Program, which will collectively bring people together to participate in this milestone year and ensure that the economic impact of Ontario150 is felt in every corner of the province.

Investing in programs and infrastructure for Ontario’s 150th anniversary is part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.
