The Council of Agencies Serving South Asians (CASSA) is hosting the first ever South Asian Gift of Life Week in Canada, to be held from October 5th to October 11th, 2015. The goals of this campaign are two-folds. To address the cultural and religious myths about organ and tissue donation that persist in the South Asian communities, and to remove systemic barriers that prevent meaningful engagement of South Asians in campaigns for organ donations.
The South Asian Gift of Life Week was launched on Monday, October 5that the Stephen Leacock Community Centre in Scarborough with the Inauguration and Appreciation Dinner. At this free event CASSA presented awards to various community partners for their support of the campaign. Religious leaders spoke from various perspectives from major South Asian religions to help eliminate existing misconceptions about organ and tissue donation. A transplant surgeon as well as a kidney transplant recipient also spokeas panelists to highlight the medical process and the recipient experience of organ donation. The Inauguration Dinner had almost 100 attendees.
Councillor Chin Lee and Councillor Jim Karygiannis also attended the forum and expressed their support for organ and tissue donation.
Today in Ontario, there are over 1600 people waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. One organ donor can save up to eight lives and enhance as many as 75 through the gift of tissue.
Registration saves lives. With evidence of their loved one’s registered consent, almost all families honour this donation decision. In the absence of registered consent, only 50 percent of families consent to organ donation.
Council of Agencies Serving South Asians will be hosting various events through this week, for more information please check their website.
