OTTAWA, ON – The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, and the Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Conservative Shadow Minister for Finance, today issued the following statement regarding the Fall Economic Statement and an upcoming Conservative motion:

“On Wednesday, the Liberals will table their Fall Economic Statement and no matter what it contains, only one thing really matters.  Justin Trudeau needs to tell Canadians when he will balance the budget.  Future generations shouldn’t be on the hook for his reckless spending.

“Justin Trudeau said he would only run small deficits of $10 billion a year, and that he would balance the budget by 2019. But he broke those promises.  Instead, this year’s deficit is now almost $20 billion, three times what Justin Trudeau said it would be, and he has added $60 billion in debt.

“You don’t need to be an economist to understand that more debt today means higher taxes tomorrow.  Canadians know its wrong to leave their kids with an unpaid credit card bill.  But that’s exactly what Justin Trudeau is doing.  It is nothing short of intergenerational theft.

“Justin Trudeau has never said when he will balance the budget. The only thing we know for sure is that it won’t be by next year, as promised. This week, Conservatives will force a vote in the House of Commons urging Justin Trudeau to finally say when his budget will be balanced as part of the Fall Economic Statement.

“Every Liberal will have to stand up and be counted on their record on this broken promise and this failure to balance the budget.

“A Conservative government will stop the raid on future generations, eliminate Justin Trudeau’s deficits, and get Canada’s fiscal house back in order.”
