  1. Naurang Singh Mangat, a former professor and renowned scientist, who has been looking after the homeless, disabled, mentally sick, orphans and the poor sick people in India for many years, is visiting Brampton and Mississauga from February 11 to 15. He will be staying at Singh Sabha Gurdwara, Malton.

Dr Mangat is a former professor and scientist of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, University of Windsor, and Morrison Scientific Inc. Calgary. He is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society of London (UK). Besides publishing about 60 research papers in statistics and related fields in world famous journals of the U.S., Canada, U.K., Germany, Italy, Mexico and India, he is a co-author of an internationally used textbook “Elements of Survey Sampling.”

He is a founder of the charity – Guru Amar Das Apahaj Ashram – that runs a home for the homeless near village Sarabha in Ludhiana district of Punjab in India. For many years he used to pick up the disabled and sick people from the footpaths and roadsides and take them to hospital for treatment and pay their expenses. Sometimes he even had to stay in the hospital to look after them. His determination, sincerity, hard work and unflinching belief to help the needy ultimately led to the building of the Guru Amar Das Apahaj Ashram.

About 25 homeless, disabled, mentally challenged and poor sick people are living in the ashram permanently. All of them are provided food, clothes, medical help and nursing care free of cost. The second storey of the building is near completion. On completion of two more floors, the institute will be catering to hundreds of such needy people in the future. Dr Mangat can be reached on his cell phone at 403-401-8787, or email nsmangat14@hotmail.com. For more information, visit www.apahajashram.org.
