MP Ruby Sahota participates in Joint Brampton Consultations on Electoral Reform
21/08/2016 – Brampton, Ontario – The five Brampton Members of Parliaments – Ruby Sahota (Brampton North), Raj Grewal (Brampton East), Kamal Khera (Brampton West), Sonia Sidhu (Brampton South) and Ramesh Sangha (Brampton Centre) held a joint town hall discussion on Electoral Reform to ensure that Canadians have the opportunity to participate in this national dialogue on our electoral system at the federal level. Mark Holland, the Parliamentary Secretary for Democratic Institutions was also in attendance to observe and contribute to the overall discussion.
The House of Commons mandated the Special Committee on Electoral Reform with the task of leading a national consultation process on Canadian federal electoral reform in 2016. The Government is confident that the committee will consult broadly and move beyond narrow political interests to address the broader public interest, which includes strengthening the inclusion of all Canadians in our diverse society. Ms. Ruby Sahota (Brampton North) is a member of this committee.
“I am honoured to be a member of this all-party special committee where we strive to give everyone a fairer, stronger and more representative voice in future elections,” said MP Ruby Sahota. “This town hall gave me and my fellow Brampton colleagues a better understanding of what Bramptonians value and also what they want to see changed in our electoral system.”
The information gathered at this joint Brampton Electoral Reform Town Hall will be included in a report that will be presented to the Special Committee on Electoral Reform. MPs from coast to coast to coast will be submitting similar reports and the Committee is expected to conclude its work in early December 2016.
