BJP spokesperson G.V.L. Narasimha Rao has aid that an emergency meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence would be convened after a news report in a weekly suggested that a few Cabinet Ministers in the previous United Progressive Alliance II government had “floated a fake and baseless” story of an attempted coup by the Army.

Rao, a member of the committee, asked if Congress president Rahul Gandhi had any role in the matter. “It was not just a political conspiracy but an attempt to defame the Indian Army,” he alleged. “This was a drama, a conspiracy. Via this, a plot was hatched to defame the Army. The country’s top intelligence officials, when they tell the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that it’s a hoax, this matter should have ended there. What was the motive behind floating the fake and baseless story about the Army coup,” Mr. Rao asked.

Asked about the media report, former Defence Minister A.K. Antony said he had given detailed answers on this issue in Parliament.
