Former German tennis star Boris Becker was declared bankrupt by a court in London  after failing to pay a “substantial” long-standing debt since 2015.

Lawyers for the three-time Wimbledon champion pleaded with a Bankruptcy Court registrar to allow Becker a “last chance” to pay off the debt.

But Registrar Christine Derrett ruled there was a lack of credible evidence the outstanding payment would be forthcoming and refused to adjourn the case. “One has the impression of a man with his head in the sand,” she said of the six-time Major champion after making the bankruptcy order.

The bankruptcy application was made by private bankers Arbuthnot Latham & Co in connection with a judgment debt owed them by Becker dating back to 2015. The German’s lawyers had argued there was sufficient evidence to show that he would be able to pay the debt soon through a refinancing arrangement, involving remortgaging a property in Mallorca.

Marian Hossa to miss next season due to skin disorder

Chicago Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa will not play next season because of a what he announced as a “progressive skin disorder.”

Hossa, 38, said he has been undergoing treatment under the supervision of the Blackhawks’ medical staff. Hossa told a sports magazine that  the side effects of the medications made it impossible for him to play in what would have been his 20th NHL season in 2017-18.

“Over the course of the last few years, under the supervision of the Blackhawks medical staff, I have been privately undergoing treatment for a progressive skin disorder and the side effects of the medications involved to treat the disorder,” Hossa said in a press statement. “Due to the severe side effects associated with those medications, playing hockey is not possible for me during the upcoming 2017-18 season. While I am disappointed that I will not be able to play, I have to consider the severity of my condition and how the treatments have impacted my life both on and off the ice.”

Hossa owns 1,134 points (525 goals, 609 assists) in 1,309 career NHL games with the Blackhawks, Ottawa Senators, Atlanta Thrashers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings. He ranks 34th on the NHL all-time goal-scoring list, 80th on the assists list and 54th on the points list, and 60th in games played.

The 33-year-old Harris started 15 games for the Jets in 2016, recording 95 tackles and a half-sack in 15 games. He missed his first game in eight years last season.

In 154 career games, Harris owns 1,087 tackles, 35 sacks, 31 passes defensed and six interceptions.
