Four-year-old Jay Shah had his laces tied and was ready to go on an early Sunday morning. Jay was on a mission with his father, to fundraise for a cause close to his family’s heart and one that reflects a reality of our time: cancer research.

Jay was determined to take action and help bring awareness to his local community. For the last 8 weeks, Jay took up the cause of raising funds and awareness to support the 19th annual BAPS Charities Walk 2016 benefiting the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. The Walk, which took place on Sunday July 10, 2016, started from the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir at 61 Claireville Drive, Toronto (near Hwy. 427 and Finch Ave. West). Inspired by the motto of think globally, act locally, Jay personally raised over $1,050. With the help of his father, Jay went door to door in his community and also collected funds online to reach his goal.   This year’s walk brought together over 1,000 participants between the ages of 4 and 80. The walk was launched with warm-up exercises and opening speeches by sponsors and special guests including: Dr. Kirsty Duncan, MP, Etobicoke North, Minister of Science; Sven Spengemann, MP, Mississauga-Lakeshore; Dr. Shafiq Qaadri, MPP, Etobicoke North; Councillor Vincent Crisanti, Ward 1, Etobicoke North

The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world. The BAPS Charities Walk will support the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation’s Billion Dollar Campaign for Personalized Cancer Care which is a multi-faceted, integrated approach towards finding the right treatment, for the right patient, at the right time. Laura Syron, VP, Community Programs, The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation said, “The BAPS community is one of the most generous and giving communities and we are honoured that they selected the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation as one of the beneficiaries of this Walk.”

On Saturday July 16 at 9am, the BAPS Charities Walk in Scarborough, starting from the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir at 1840 Birchmount Road, Scarborough, will support the lifesaving work of the Scarborough Hospital. For more information, please visit: bapscharities.org/Walk16Scarborough.
