FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, ON – Today, David Anderson, Member of Parliament for Cypress Hills-Grasslands and Official Opposition Critic for International Human Rights and Religious Freedom, released the following statement to mark the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery and the anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others:

“Every day, millions of people around the world are subjected to cruel forms of modern-day slavery. Families are ripped apart and lives are ruined because of others’ exploitation, greed, and self-interest. Today is a reminder to the international community that this abuse still exists and that we have a responsibility, as Canadians, to speak out against it.

“Slavery – whether it takes the form of a forced marriage, the use of child soldiers, human trafficking, or child labour – has no place in the 21st century. I call on the Government of Canada to condemn the ongoing abuse of basic human rights and express Canada’s steadfast support for those working to end all forms of slavery.”
