Barely three days after India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly denounced anti-Dalit violence and cow vigilantism, two Dalit brothers were  beaten up by a group of people in Andhra Pradesh on suspicion that they had stolen a cow and were skinning it.

The incident occurred near Amalapuram town in East Godavari district. The victims were rushed to a hospital where the condition of one of them is said to be serious. The police registered a case under the SC/ST (prevention of atrocities) Act and detained seven persons. Those assaulted were Mokati Elisha (56) and Mokati Venkateswara Rao (53).
