A school cab driver has been arrested in east Delhi for sexually assaulting a four-year-old girl. Though the man was arrested on Monday night, the child had to go through further trauma  after she was allegedly turned away from the school gate for unknown security reasons. However, the school retracted its decision when the parents approached police. It has issued a verbal apology , dubbing it as “miscommunication“.

On Monday , the child refused to board the Maruti Omni van which used to ferry her to school. When her mother tried to persuade her to do so, she pointed at the driver and bursted into tears. She told her parents that the driver, Vikram, would make her sit on his lap and touch her private parts. If she objected, he would slap her. Her shocked parents said they were turned away by the school when they first approached it. “The school authorities asked her for the vehicle number. When she could not provide the number, the school refused to entertain the complaint,“  child’s father has been quoted by a daily from New Delhi.

The family was in for further trauma. When they went to the school to drop the child, “The teacher at the gate asked us to take her back until further decisions were taken“, said her mother. She was told the child could not be allowed to sit with the other children. And when she tried to reason with the teacher, she was allegedly asked to look for other places to admit the child. “We had admitted her to the school on March 25. We don’t have the means to go elsewhere. I have decided to go back to my hometown in Mathura to look for a job there,“ said the child’s father. The parents, meanwhile, approached police again for help. Once police confronted the school authorities, it backed out and issued a verbal apology .

“We have nothing against the child or her parents and have even offered to counsel the child. I’m sure there was some sort of miscommunication which resulted in this confusion,“ said a managerial committee member. Police said legal action will be taken against the school once they receive a formal complaint from the family about the matter.
