The year begins with world leaders keeping a close watch on the happening in Syria while hoping that the biggest event of 2016 would bring in world order.  Come November and United States would witness a change of guard with President Obama set to redeem office and in the last year he has encouraged staff to “stay on offense”.  “I said at the beginning of this year that interesting stuff happens in the fourth quarter — and we are only halfway through,” Obama’s words  during his annual year-end news conference gave an  indication that he would remain firm on core issues until he is replaced.  With front runner Donald Trump adopting a strong stance against letting in Muslims in USA, the elections are set to be closely watched. The control of US Senate too would dominate the political scene in United States. The Democrats have ten seats at risk and the Republicans have 24 seats and could change the very face of the senate.

Issue in Syria would tend to have an international focus, and many Syrians would have their eyes set on Canada too. The civic war in Syria has been on since 2011, and the refugee crisis saw Canada opening its doors to refugees and trying to generate a feeling of one more election promise fulfilled. Going by the response that a section of Canadians have expressed, perhaps there would be a need to look at the numbers that may be allowed in this year. Liberals also promised to get Canadian fighter jets out of the war against ISIS. That was supposed to happen with Prime Minister Trudeau assuming office, but it’s not proving to be easy for the forces to come out of the war zone. The Liberals may be asked to give a timetable.

For drivers in Ontario the New Year will usher in new fees and rules with the annual fee for the vehicle permit, number plate and validation fees being revised. Effective Jan 1, drivers are now required under the law to remain stopped at a pedestrian or school crossing until everyone is off the roadway. Pedestrians too will be prohibited from entering a crosswalk if a vehicle is too close to stop. In another big change planned for 2016, Ontario intends to bring in new penalties that treat dug impaired driving the same as drunk driving. A ray of hope comes with Premier Kathleen Wynne having expressed plans to include a review of the new legislation governing bargaining between the province, school boards and unions representing Catholic, elementary and secondary school teachers.

There have been talks between Canada and India on the issue of providing Uranium to India and finally in early December, the first shipment of uranium from Cameco, SK arrived in India as a part of $350 million, five-year contract signed during India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Canada. It came with strong symbolic resonance of a relationship that has new energy as the prime driver and could gather more momentum in 2016 with a visit to India by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The visit could be a statement from the new Liberal government that it wants to take engagement to another level, and Trudeau himself has already gained a high international profile. Both Conservatives and the NDP will have to re-look at their policies and devise ways to strike a chord with their voter after having received a drubbing in the federal elections. Their first test would come in the form of facing the electoral in April.

One of the most hopeful events in 2015 was a surprise visit on Christmas Day by Narendra Modi to Pakistan- Changed tones showing signs of better relations between the two countries in days to come. Both nations are under the watchful eye of the world leaders. Hopes are being expressed that the two leaders would take it further. However, a lot would depend upon the Army in Pakistan; otherwise the step taken by Narendra Modi could hit a jam as it happened with the Atal Bihari and Nawaz Sharif initiative.

Prime Minister Modi’s popularity would be out to test with states of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Kerala going to polls. With opposition parties led by Bihar chief minister working for get parties together against Narendra Modi, the “Grand Alliance” would be another subject for poll pundits. Another leader from India has stirred a hornet’s nest by initiating probe against Narendra Modi’s finance minister and would be the man to watch out.

Rio Olympics would be the biggest event on the sporting front. There have been concerns about Rio’s polluted waterways, carrying dangerous levels of disease causing viruses. Hopefully, it will ultimately be safe Olympics.

Merely five days separate the two flagship cricketing extravaganzas – the ICC World T20 and the Indian Premier League (IPL). Even as World T20 draws to a close on 3 April, IPL takes to the ground on 9 April. While T20 world cup would invoke national pride, the IPL would be under greater scrutiny having faced reprimand of court where by two teams were barred from participating.
